Vacuum Casting or Injection Moulding? A Comprehensive Comparison

In the world of manufacturing, two popular techniques often considered by engineers and designers are vacuum casting and injection moulding. Depending on project requirements, these methods offer different benefits and may serve various purposes. By exploring the strengths and limitations of vacuum casting and  injection moulding , you can make a more informed decision for your production line. Vacuum Casting – an Overview Vacuum casting involves pouring liquid polyurethane into a silicone mould, which cures into a solid part. The master pattern for this mould is normally created using  3D printing  or  CNC machining , and can carry fine detailing. This method is widely appreciated for its quick turnaround times and is ideal for low-to medium-volume production runs. A tool or mould will typically deliver between 25 and 50 parts without compromising the end part. Originally published here:  https://quickparts.com/gb/vacuum-casting-or-injection-moulding/

The Versatility of Vacuum Casting

Your supplier will utilise your existing design files to create a master pattern through methods like CNC machining or 3D printing if the part has intricate detailing or is complex. A high-quality silicone mould is then created by encapsulating the master pattern with liquid silicone. Once cured, the mould is split open, allowing for master pattern removal. 3D Printing Tips & Tricks

What is warping? “Warping” occurs with many 3D printing processes, particularly when heating and cooling are involved, which cause material shrinkage, where the corners of the print lift and detach from the build plate.  Stereolithography (SLA)  and  Selective Laser Sintering (SLS)  can be affected most by warping;  Digital Light Processing (DLP)  can also be affected, but it’s not common because the build envelope is so small. Of these, SLS has the most potential for warping. Our Quickparts team works to keep you aware of when a part can warp and what may cause it to do so. We watch for potential issues in everything from the design file to the temperature of our facility, the time of year, and when a piece will arrive at its destination and discuss any factors with you. These could include changing the shipping times, sending the part in a temperature-controlled shipping container, or adjusting your file. Visit here for more details:  https://quickpa...

SLA 3D Printing for Production Parts. Really?

Everyone’s familiar with the versatility of SLA (stereolithography) printing for prototyping. Its fantastic layer resolution gives a beautifully smooth A-surface (think reduced finishing times); it’s one of the most precise 3D printing processes, enabling intricate detailing; many industrial SLA printers offer a large print bed enabling large parts to be printed in one piece; and it’s comparatively fast.   But, it’s a common belief that SLA resins, while great for prototyping and creating detailed models, often lack the mechanical properties required for production parts. They tend to be brittle and can be susceptible to wear, impact, and environmental factors.   Let’s turn that notion on its head. Stereolithography (SLA) 3D printing can be used in production parts when certain requirements or conditions align with its capabilities. SLA has several advantages and is suitable for specific applications. Here are just a few scenarios where SLA 3D printing is used in production pa...
